Interview with Author Debra Poneman and Gina Glocksen Idol about Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul

I had the opportunity spend some time talking with Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul author Debra Poneman. In a total surprise, it has also brought one of the products authentic, a real American Idol, Gina Glocksen.

Debra, can you tell us a little about yourself?

In 1981, I Yes based on the successful Seminars ™, Inc. is the seminar that launched the careers of many top transformational leaders, including Deepak Chopra, Janet Attwood (The Passion Test) and Marci Shimoff (happy without reason). The Yes to Success seminar provides a system to discover your true purpose, then gives you the tools you need to achieve this goal – and the knowledge of how to live each day of your journey with joy and deep. I also given hundreds of speeches for corporations, associations and professional organizations across the country, wrote a syndicated newspaper column on principles of success and have appeared on hundreds of radio and TV talk shows.

However, my greatest achievement is that I take off 19 years of my career to be a mother full time! Chicken Soup for the Soul American Idol is my first venture back into the world of writing. I spent 6 months interviewing and then work on their stories with the top 10 Idols from every season, the crew backstage-, fans and judges for the co-author of the book that brought together the # 1 show on television and the history of the series No. 1 non-fiction book in publishing history.

The Chicken Soup series is one of the successes of the book of the great franchise last decade. How did you work with this organization? And a follow-up, where did you get the idea of featuring American Idol?

Well, actually, it was because of my son.

When Daniel was 10 years old, he started watching American Idol Season One. It was completely frozen by the spectacle, which was unusual because we are not a big TV family. One day, he said, "Mom must be careful that with me. Would it love. "And I think," Oh please, anything but that does not make me watch a talent show. "But the mother I am being consumed, and really appreciate a way I could spend time with my son, I put on a smile and said: "Great Daniel, I'd just love talent to watch this show with you. "It took me two shows before I was full AI fanatic. And of course, we went to a concert Live American Idol this summer.

Next season – the big Clay / Ruben year – my husband and my daughter joined us each week to watch the show, then all family went to the concert this summer (twice!). And all along, I would say to my children, I'll get to know these idols personally. I'll do something with them. I do not know what it is, but I am absolutely sure. "

Also during season two, I discovered my dear friend and colleague, Marci Shimoff, author of Chicken for Women's Soul and Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul and author currently The best-selling happy for no reason, was also a closet Idoloholic and we start e-mailing back and forth from our own weekly reviews of each show complete with editorials … "Clay will win because he is the boy next door. It is impossible that you can not love If ."…" Jennifer voted off, I'm never watching again ."…." what happened with Carrie's hair?? "We just thought our editorials were so brilliant that one day we said:" We really need to publish this kind of thing ", then simultaneously exclaimed, "Chicken Soup for the Soul of American Idol! "And as they say, the rest is history.

I understand you spent some time on the road with idols? This must have been a lot of fun. Can you tell us a bit about it?

In fact, the only time I was with the idols was last season. I was back stage for several days interviewing the Top 10 Season 6 finalists and the crew, including their make-up artist, director, vocal coaches, wardrobe stylist, musical director, producer and director. It was great fun – especially being there for the recording of the poster.

But what I enjoyed most about it was discovered that these competitors are not just people ok with great voices, they were great people with great voices. As I said in the introduction the book …. "In the process of bringing their stories to you, we have discovered what most have suspected – That they are not talented singers, but extraordinary human beings who touch our lives not only by the beauty of their voices, but by the depth of their souls. "There is a reason why America falls in love with them and it goes beyond talent. I think we have good instincts who these people really are and we vote our hearts – be verified with them that America has chosen the right top 10 every season!

And what I liked most about spending time with the support team is that I discovered that their lives parallel the lives of idols. What I mean is that with backgrounds difficult and none of them had given their success with them on a silver platter and they too were living their dreams. They are truly an American idol their respective professions – You can not win a bigger pot than doing your thing for the # 1 show in television history. They each tell their story in the book. It's very inspiring.

Most of the stories in Chicken Soup is very moving and inspiring, it was a difficult task to select stories for inclusion?

Regarding the stories of the idol, an idol who wanted a story Included was well received. The difficult part is choosing which story to choose! For example, Jasmine Trias shared an amazing story of a young man cerebral palsy who lived in a group home outside of Las Vegas. He liked it so Jasmine was an album of photos of her on the set of his wheelchair and do not show anyone willing to watch. He also wore a t-shirt that read "Jasmine # 1 Fan." She surprised when she appeared in Las Vegas and arranged for him to attend his concert and back stage. I cried when she told me history. Then she told me another story of a woman who had been in a coma for some time and it literally came out of a coma when she heard a song to his angel. It turned out that her granddaughter watched American Idol and Jasmine sang. She believes that Jasmine saved her life. How do you choose when you can have a story?

I understand that you have made a special guest, you can make presentations?

Yes, this is Gina Glocksen who arrived at # 9 on the season 6.

Hello, thank you Gina for taking part. Can you tell us a little you and your participation in American Idol?

In fact, I am telling my story in the book, but to give you the short version … My passion was obviously the song. I started singing in front of people my whole life and began to make serious about it around 15 years, but my work has been as a dental assistant. I heard the 2nd season and he has not even passed the first round and was told I was not what they sought.

I did not audition for season 3 or 4, but since religion and thought, not what they are looking for? What they I do not? How in no way is this different girl than me? So when the season 5 rolled around, I decided that I did not want suck saliva the rest of my life I auditioned again and all the way to Hollywood week. When I was doing my final audition that would have put me in the top 40, I forgot my words – that is a moment to review.

I was so stressed that I said I would never do that to again, but when the season 6 wrapped around my boyfriend, Joe, who, incidentally, is now my fiancé – he proposed on stage at the Idol Live Tower in Chicago – said, "Gina, I feel that this is your year." So I went to Los Angeles in the hope that the judge (Which is one of the producers) that you have to cross before reaching Paula, Simon and Randy remembered me and he did. I even not gone beyond the first round. They told me I just bring the same thing as me last year.

Most sane would have given up, but I did not let someone tell me that I could not achieve my dream. And next week I went for auditions Memphis. And the rest is history. Not only was I in the top 10 but I am a new co-organizers of this year on American Idol Extra.

It was not until I read Chicken Soup for the Soul American Idol that I really started to get an idea of the magnitude program, but it also seems to be a very "family" environment. Do you socialize outside the game?

Gina: I'm incredibly close people of my season. I mean, we lived in small apartments and then for 14 hours a day behind the scenes together for at least one month or more depending on when you started, then 2 buses for three months on tour. Did we socialize? We do not really see anyone but each other! Fortunately my world got along great season. I heard stories that there were conflicts in other seasons, but we are all very close and I think we'll always stay that way.

Debra: Something I noticed when I interviewed the crew behind the scenes is how much affection they have each other. I never heard a crew member never said a bad word about another. They come be expressed respect and admiration of their colleagues. Idol is really like a well oiled machine. What struck me too is how the crew all truly care about idols and how they are heart broken when everyone voted off. Mezhgan Hussainy makeup artist who is the idol, and by the way, has an incredible story in the book about how his family escaped to Afghanistan, I said that when Charlie Grigsby voted off on season 2, everyone loved him so much that the air was worse than the scenes of a funeral. It said she could not even tell anyone that night. She had just come home, she was so devastated.

A question for fun. I will name names, but a judge has a bit of his reputation candid remarks. Is this just an "on camera" persona?

Gina: It's hard to say. We do not always get to see the judges off camera, so I must consider that, "This person, what you see is what you get.

Debra: But I must say that many of the Idols I interviewed said that even if " judge "can be brutal, it is often the first to jump on the scene when someone gets voted off and give them a hug and say," Do not give up. "

I really want to thank you for taking the time to talk with me. Good luck in your future endeavors.
